How to Measure For Shutters

Getting Ready
If you need to use a ladder makes sure it's secure against the house. Have someone hold the ladder to be on the safe side. This can be done on the inside of the house also by measuring from top of jamb to top of jamb, but for a more accurate measurement do it from outside.
Start Measuring
First measure from the top of the window to the top of your window sill to get the height the shutter needs to be. Unless you are willing to pay custom pricing then you would go with a standard shutter a bit smaller or a bit larger than you window. Although they look best a bit smaller than taller.
Write Down Your Information
Write all the measurements down as you go along and specify which window it belongs to.
Stay Constant
Staying consistent with the heights will give you a cleaner line in the appearance of the shutters beside the windows. In other words if you have 4 windows across the front of your house use the same measurement for each. You will only have to measure one window too if they are all the same size.
Figure out the Right Size Shutters
Next find the window with the least amount of space between the window and another window or the side of a wall. Measure it and choosing shutters with this width will look best. Let's say you have 31" in between two windows. It would probably be best to go with 14" shutters apposed to 15" shutters that way you do have some space in between each shutter and they are not touching each other.
Count All the Windows
Now you have all the measurements you will need to know how many pairs you need and the sizes of each pair. Shutters are bought in pairs.
Pick Your Style
Shutters are standard widths and heights so unless you are willing to pay out some extra money then I would suggest in sticking with the standard.

Also there are different styles of shutters. Listed below are a few common ones. You must decide which goes best with the style of house you own. The basic shutter is called a raised panel shutter. This is the most common used shutter in the past. You also have louvered shutters that is a step above the basic raised panel shutters. The next shutter style would be board. batten or spaced board and batten.
